Here are some figures I'm preparing for a miniatures adaptation of the boardgame "The Hills Rise Wild." Factions of hillbillies, deep ones, cultists, and ghouls search for and fight over the Necronomicon, seeking to bring it back to their base to summon their dark gods in a bizarre game of capture the flag. I plan to eventually ditch the game's rules and use in their place ".45 Adventure" by Rattrap Productions and Rich Johnson. Future factions will include: more hillbilies and cultists, state cops, lots of gangsters, US Marines, US rocket troops, archaeologists, hea read more »

by Mike W. Started early – about 5:30 with Augie, Mike, Rob and Edith in attendance. Rob wanted to get his "Dominion" fix right off the bat! Played with the standard opening cards. Rob cleaned our clocks with 28 points to our 14 (we all had the same). Rob said Mike came in second since he had the fewest turns – whoopee. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/36218 Alan, Sandy and Tony the showed up. Sandy broke out "Five Crowns". I think she beat us into a bloody pulp. She always seemed to have the right combos to go out early. Augie and Edith had some painful 40+ point hands. Next was "6 Nimmt". Augie won handily – the first few hands he managed to escape with no bull's heads. Mike, Edith and Alan left and the others played Dominion with one of the other recommended deck sets. Augie thinks Rob won again. Here is his recap: We called the game early because we were the only ones left and they dimmed the lights on us. We left around 10 PM. I guess we were about half way through the game. Sandy said she would play the game again. My cards were not coming up in good order. We had a few different card types, mostly higher cost cards. I think we had 3 five cost cards, 3 four cost cards, 2 three cost cards and 2 two cost cards. NOTE: Tony asked if we could move the Muldoon's meeting back to Wednesday since his son is now a brown belt in karate and his schedule has changed. Everyone there agreed. The moderator of the PIGSLIST will update the Muldoon's reminder. The German gnomes are outfitted in Great War-ish uniforms: great coats, pickelhaubs, the Kaiser gnome with his Col. Klink helmet, etc. All paints are Vallejo unless otherwise noted. I primed these with Floquil Light Gray. There are a few basic figure types with different uniforms: the Kaiser and NCO are individual with their own look. The bulk of the figures are riflemen with pickelhaubs and greatcoats along with two bier stein grenadiers. Then there are four militia with lederhosen, pointy hats and pitchforks. Paint the entire faces and beards with Saddle Brown, which has a ruddy reddish tinge. I don't complete the faces and beards until later, unlike on the Highlanders. Pickelhaubs are Green Ochre. I wanted a slightly yellowish tan but I think this color is too yellow, reminiscent of WW2 German camo yellow. But what the heck, they're gnomes; this isn't history class. read more »

I picked up a regiment of Highlander gnomes from Brigade Games for use in Gnome Wars games at the HMGS conventions (Cold Wars, Historicon and Fall In). Here's my approximate painting sequence. Clean and base. Prime with Testors Light Earth. Block in fleshy bits with Vallejo Medium Flesh. I drybrushed some with Basic Skintone but after a few decided to leave well enough alone. I washed the flesh with Magic Wash Skin then went over some highlights with Medium Flesh. Noses and cheeks got dots of Basic Skintone to make them look jolly (for heavily armed Highlanders). Hair drybrushed Vallejo Light Orange, except for the Berserker and his white lime do. Kilts, sashes and tam-o-shanters with Vallejo Intermediate Green. Washed with Magic Wash Dark Green. Jackets with several coats of Vallejo Scarlet as the coverage was a bit weak. Belts, shoes and hatbands in black, socks in Vallejo Sky Grey. read more »

by Mike W Attendees: Mike, Rob, Tony, Sandy, Edith, Alan Mike and Rob showed up first, so the ubiquitous round of cribbage followed. Mr. Lucky lost to Rob but managed to round the skunk marker before the end. Mike got in trouble because he actually miscounted one of Rob's hands and shorted him two points! (Rob asked how he could In the mean time Edith M. showed up. She is a new recruit from Picatinny, but she probably won't make the Fuddrucker meetings. Tony and Sandy also arrived. Next up was "Wizard" with six players. Edith took an early lead and was unstoppable till the end, Mike trailed closely but the others were far behind. Win for the newbie! Alan A. from Picatinny then showed up, Rob brought out "Moto Grand Prix", Next was 6 Nimmt, http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/432. A final quick round of the Great Dalmuti, http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/929 Next time, Fuddruckers in Parsippany on April Fool's Day. Post to Yahoo groups PIGSLIST if you are planning to come.

Recap by Mike W - First Mike and Augie played cribbage; Mike (Mr. Lucky) bested Augie 2 games to 1. Someone walking by said he thought they only played cribbage in Boston – guess not! While awaiting Ron, Augie broke out his reprint of "Can't Stop". Ron later said he thought it was a pretty good reprint considering some others he has sent. Mike continued his string on this game – he lost as usual. If Sandy was around, she would have won as usual. In any case Augie got 5 numbers to Mike's 2 or 3 and he won. While Mike and Augie were finishing Can't Stop Ron showed up with Perikles, Oltremare and something else in tow (Oltremare is also a reprint – Mike had brought the original version once, but it was like a miniature game compared to the reprint). We voted on Perikles and he started punching out the pieces. Regarding pieces there were quite a few wooden blocks and counters. Ron is a brave man for bringing them to Fudd's – many a piece has been almost been eaten up by the black upholstery of the round table we sit around in the back by the bar. Bringing a flashlight to check for missing pieces before we leave might be a good idea. Background: In the first, players vie for area control in each of the six states, which end in elections. Players who win the election in each state can then "control" that state's army. In the second phase, players use cards to move their armies to attack or defend one of seven battles (each tied to a state, and you can't attack your own!) that are up for grabs that round. Ron jumped out to an early lead, Mike and Augie tried to stop him but there always seemed to be an opportunity to grab some easy battles that lead Mike astray. Mike twice (out of three rounds) got a nice collection of city-states that had few or no battles for that turn (you get to see where the battles will be before you vie for control of the city-states). One reason is that Ron stole Mike's "Mr. Lucky" hat – I recall a lot of 10, 11's and 12's being rolled by Ron to win battles (while Mike had quite a few 2's with the double dice. Did I tell you I hate wooden dice? Can't get the right "action"!). Assassinations were rampant and screwed up many a plan. I think Augie cold have won, but he did not contest Sparta the last round with a candidate even though he had the most influence to peddle. Ron won with 61 pts, Augie 53, Mike 51. The statues one gets for keeping track of past control of city-state's are quite powerful, some of the larger states give 9 victory points for controlling that state for a turn (assuming it didn't lose too many battles during the game) – that's the same as winning a huge battle (battles seem to range from 3 to 8 pts). Gotta watch that if this is played again. Boardgame Geek says it plays best with 5 people, with three there was little negotiating going on. Perikles:

Recap by Mike W - Mike and Ben N (a new recruit) showed up first. Mike (aka "Mr. Lucky") In the meantime Wendy, her friend Frank, Rob, Tony and Michael (his son) showed up. Since we had 6 the new copy of "Giants" that Mike brought went unused – Roku tablets, Moais and Ahus will have to wait till some other time. Five is the max with that puppy. Rob broke out Chicago Express. Mike pissed off Rob when he decided to join him on the B&O rather than jumping in with Wendy and Augie on Pennsylvania. Mike thought that it looked further along and could make it to Chicago easily. Rob's complaint was that since Mike bought the share last (and before dividend payouts) he got it too cheap and did not infuse enough capital into the company for expansion (saw a post on BGG that someone initiates bidding on a RR he owns early on to get a partner to allow for expansion). Mike later corrected this by buying another share but Rob was disheartened (since Mike got 2/3's of the dividend money) and B&O got into Chicago behind the Pennsylvania RR. Pennsylvania had stomped across the board with three shareholders to help things along (Tony joined Augie and Wendy). C&O languished until Sandy joined Augie late in the game. NY made a last minute spurt with Wendy and Sandy (and Tony?) at the helm and reached Chicago also. The two shares of Wabash were bought by Wendy and Tony and it quickly jumped to about $12. When the dust settled the winner was Wendy by about comfortable amount. Some lamented that their last minute purchase of shares did not allow enought dividend rounds to get a propery ROI. He who has the most money at the end wins - shares mean nothing. Last was a game of Wizard, we had six people, but only got to round nine as it was about 10PM and the only others in restaurant were Cassandra and a waiter sitting at the bar. Since Augie had an 80 pt lead we acknowledged his prowess as having no trump in the last hand makes big lead changes difficult. Next week Fudd's is on the schedule. Post your intentions so people know who is planning on attending.

A little background: For some unknown reason, I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to redesign D&D in my own fashion. It's not that I don't like the game, in any edition (well, maybe 2nd; I never really played it and simply despised it as a 1e curmudgeon); I just keep thinking about how I'd like to do it, and then I start actually typing it out. In any case, I've written enough that I'd like to have a place for people to see it, mull it, even play it, then give me feedback on what they think works and what doesn't. I was going to post each chapter as a separate blog entry, but I ran into formatting issues and lazily decided to just attach a version here. I will update it periodically, especially as I incorporate feedback. --Wolfrath
